The College of Lake County recently announced “Into the Woods” as the theatre’s musical for the spring. CLC originally planned this for the summer musical in 2020, but it was unfortunately canceled due to the pandemic. Thankfully, it has found its way back into production.

Originally written and composed in 1986, the musical–created by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim–is a modern interpretation of some of the more beloved, well-known fairy tales written by the Grimm Brothers. Characters like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Jack (and his beanstalk, of course) all appear together in a fantastic, thrilling adventure.

CLC’s production of the show will be directed by Craig Rich, a theatre professor at the college. Dance professor Lamaiya Lancaster will be choreographing the show–Rich and Lancaster have worked together on many projects and recently had a successful run in the school’s production of “I Have a Story to Tell”. Jean Hersey and Paul Hefner were also involved in musical and orchestral production.

CLC is calling for anyone 13 and older to audition. Auditions are held in the Studio Theatre at 6:30 p.m. on May 16th and 17th, but performers only need to attend one day. Performers should prepare a one-minute monologue of your choice and one minute of a song from the musical; an accompanist will be provided. If you have a resume, make sure to bring an acting resume. Callbacks will be held at 6:30 p.m. on May 19th.

While auditions are still a little over a month away, it’s never too early to start preparing! Starting to select songs and monologues might boost your confidence for when the date rolls around.

If cast, rehearsals will be every Monday through Thursday evening leading up to tech and dress rehearsals on July 9-15. The performance dates are July 15th, 16th, 21st, 22nd, and 23rd at 7:30 p.m. and July 17th and 24th at 2:00 p.m.

If you’re hesitant or nervous to try out, take a risk and go for it! Being involved will be a lot of fun, and it’s always good to put yourself outside your comfort zone once in a while.
