From a sudden loss to channeling grief into the emotional craft of songwriting, Soccer Mommy – the stage name for singer-songwriter Sophie Allison, presents waterworks of the raw stories that Evergreen is all about.
This upcoming fourth album by Soccer Mommy arrives Oct. 25. The lead-up of this LP also included the lead singles, Lost and M, which are both sorrowful and beautiful.
Within the song lyrics found within the first lead single, Lost, Allison describes the feeling of not being able to feel the presence of someone close to her anymore. In her song she says,
“Of keeping her with me where I go, but how she feels, I’ll never know, it’s lost to me.”
With this somber tone found in her lyricism, the track is also carried by the emotional harmony of the production of the track. The orchestral strings and the chirping birds in the distance of this lead single gives listeners a sense of beauty behind the heartbreaking effects that grief can pose in our lives.
Another single written for this album includes M, which carries the same tone as Lost, but the lyrics of M describe the memories of a once intimate feeling of a strong bond with someone close to the singer, with such lyrics as:
“I feel you even though you’re gone, and I don’t mind talking to empty halls, ‘cause I miss you like a loyal dog, waiting by the door to hear the lock turn.”
Not only do her lyrics conceptualize the feeling of missing someone, but they also create the difficulty of knowing that a certain someone won’t come back.
These singles have a down-to-earth organic feeling, which helps comfort and heal listeners. This includes string instruments like acoustic guitars and atmospheric vocals that are tender and warm, with drums that carry the heartbeat of the singles. With the bedroom pop appeal, which channels Allison’s roots of uploading her first tracks through the online independent music uploading site Bandcamp, these tracks are not just demos, but feature productions that describe the emotional energy illuminating Allison’s vocals.
Not only does Soccer Mommy display the vulnerabilities for creating honest and raw music while navigating deep complex feelings, it also gives listeners an emotional harness supported by the power of how music can bring people together, even at our lowest points in life.
In an Instagram post announcing the release of her album, Allison wrote, “These songs are very close to my heart and I hope they become close to some of yours as well.”
Allison also announced a North American and European concert tour alongside this album release, which officially kicks off in January. Find all the dates below. This album promises finding comfort and intimacy with our melancholic states.
